Individual Vehicle Tracking System

The CDG was established in 1962 and it instituted a drive-away system for new vehicles ex local (NZ) assembly plants. Up to this point in time, The CDG has progressively received road licenses such that today the CDG fleet now stands at 120 units - predominantly 6 and 8-car transporters.

The CDG has its network nationwide with depots/sub depots and storage facilities in Auckland, Waikato, Wellington, Picton, Nelson, and Christchurch and provides many services for business to business and retail including:

STORAGE

The CDG owns and manages vehicle storage facilities

  • 10,000 vehicles
  • Approx. 24 hectares (60 acres) throughout New Zealand
  • Computerised stock control
  • Vehicle movements within compounds maintained by hand-held barcode readers
  • The CDG also manages vehicle storage/inventory control at major customer sites.

DETAILING

The CDG provides/manages complementary services throughout New Zealand including

  • Wharf clearance/vehicle inspection/damage notification
  • Recovery of ex rentals/lease vehicles and the inspection thereof
  • Queuing vehicles for auction and organising rectification work as requested
  • Fit outs/detailing (including air-conditioning, radios, stereos, rear lights etc)
  • Valet/cleaning/dewaxing
  • Pre-delivery inspections
  • Organising minor body/paint rectification

Intermodal Vehicle Distribution

The distribution system operates on an intermodal basis (sea, rail, road)

  • The Car Distribution Group distributes some 80% of all new vehicles in New Zealand.
  • Major manufacturing customers include: BMW, Chrysler, Ford, GM/Holden, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota.
  • The overall distribution system handles some 190,000 vehicles per annum, including recycled rentals etc. This volume gives rise to economies of scale, which are mainly manifest in the ability to "sort by destination" and therefore, provide a daily service to most destinations.
  • Long standing trading relationships with KiwiRail, Strait Shipping, the Interisland Line and various overseas-based coastal shipping services ensures continuity of rail and sea services.
  • Continuing subcontractor arrangements with selected car transport operators ensure The CDG can meet peak demands and service certain minor destinations.

Computer System

The CDG's computerised system has the following characteristics

  • Electronic receipting of incoming vehicle shipments and outgoing distribution instructions.
  • On-screen tracking and dispatching
  • Access to web based tracking and system to system data exchange for customers
  • A complete history of each vehicle is recorded in the database
  • Invoice generation.
  • Full inventory control using bar-coding for vehicles in storage and movements in compounds.
  • Mobile data terminals (MDT) integrating both driver and compound staff to the overall system.

The CDG owns and manages over 24 hectares (60 acres) of storage facilities, for about 10,000 vehicles, throughout NZ.

Outside Storage

Stock control is computerised, and vehicle movements within compounds is maintained by hand-held barcode readers.
